History of the table

The word table is derived from a Latin word Tabula which means a flat top piece’. It was first made and used by ancient Egypt. They made it to keep some stuff elevated. The primary purpose for its use was to keep the food and other eatables elevated from the ground so that ants and other insects could not reach them. Then its use was further extended to playing games. The games such as chess and carom board were played on it. After this, the Chinese used it for painting and drafting. Greeks and Romans are well known for the use of a table. Romans take the honor of discovering the circular and semicircular tables. In the Middle Ages, tables were mainly made from wood or metal, such as iron or bronze. In today’s world, it is even made from plastics and refractories.

The table has a flat surface which is supported by pillars. These pillars are also called as legs of the table. There are usually four legs to the table. The flat surface and legs can be made up of any rigid material. It could be wood, iron, or of hard plastic. A table may have three legs as well. The upper flat surface can also be made up of glass. There are different shapes of the tables. The form of the table depends upon the geometry of the legs as well as the upper surface of the table. The upper flat surface can be square, round, rectangular, or semicircular. The width of the surface of the table has different ranges. The table’s width usually depends upon the purpose for which it is used. The flat surface could be 70 cm, 75 cm, or 80 cm. These are the standard widths. However, the customer can ask the manufacturer to make a table with the desired dimensions. There are some folding tables. These kinds of tables can be folded and are easy to move from one place to the other. The height of the tables depends upon the length of the legs of the table. The size of the tables ranges from 45 cm to 80 cm. There can be different extensions to the table. It includes drawers or shelves which are used to place other things.
